Finally did it, skied Red Mountain. This is something Mark Davis and I have wanted to do for quite some time.
This Sunday started off, looking like a good rainy day. Mark was unable to make it, so I headed off alone, looking to give Red Mountain another shot.
After getting to the trail head at about 6:45am, I headed off up the valley to the CommonWealth Basin. Made good time, hitting the bottom of the basin at about 9:00am. I then cut left, and dropped into the avalanche shoot that takes you right up the South side of Red Mountain.
Using skins was not working, so I put the skis on my back, and started off post holing it.
Took till 11:15am to get to the top of Red. Lots of holes, and lots of sun. The snow had turned to real corn by the time I headed down. Boy were my legs tired.
Hit the car at about 1:00pm. I took more time coming down than expected since I skied the avalanche chute I climbed up, which leads you way out of the way. Won't do that again.
Highly recommend skiing Red, but be ready, its a good hike to the top.
